Brian Duff's Blog: Osgood deserves better

What did Chris Osgood do to warrant this lack of respect?

Is it possible that in three short weeks he’ll be hoisting the Cup for a third time, perhaps with a record of 14-0, and there will still be a significant collection of fans and media alike suggesting he is only a winner by association?

Look, I’m the first to admit there were many times when the Osgood/No Good punch line seemed to roll off the tongue with great regularity, but isn’t it time we all got over some of the past long-range shots and bad goals that are part of every goaltender’s career?

The 1995-96 season was a long time ago.

As the NHL boasts about record attendance in the month of March, home teams are doing precious little to reward their faithful fans.

Tuesday night was the latest, eye-opening example.

When Mike Richards signed a 12-year contract extension worth $69 million dollars in December, an important standard was set.

While it wasn’t the first time we had seen a deal of this length, and though it has already been trumped by the Alex Ovechkin extension, the Richards pact could be the most significant “comparable” contract as the game moves forward.

Sitting in the press box at the Air Canada Centre Saturday night, it was nice to see Canadian Forces members being recognized, as a few hundred season ticket holders had donated their seats to the troops for the game against Ottawa.

At 23-and-a-half, he had the world by the tail. Six months later, his family’s finances secure for generations to come, the world of hockey is spinning him by the tail, in a tale of too much too soon for a player who has yet to complete his third NHL season.

Enough with the formal columns, it’s time for an all-over-the-map rant about a few things I have observed and unfortunately, in some cases, continue to observe all too frequently in the NHL.

In order for elite athletes to achieve ultimate success, a certain amount (more for some, less for others) of selfishness is required.

In the case of Eric Lindros, being selfish brought about an inordinate amount of notoriety and scrutiny from the time he was a teenager.

It’s still all about defense. This is not breaking news, but for a league focused on generating more offense, it’s telling four of the most improved teams through the first 10 games are way better defensively than a year ago.
