World Junior Championship Day 2: Slovakia shines while Finland flies

Recaps of the action from the second day of preliminary play at the world juniors in Malmo, Sweden, where Slovakia beat up on Germany 9-2 and Finland topped Norway 5-1.

SLOVAKIA 9, GERMANY 2
By Andrew Podnieks, IIHF.com: Slovakia took advantage of its scoring chances early and skated to a convincing 9-2 win over Germany this afternoon.

The win, at the Isstadion in Malmö, moves Slovakia a step closer to the playoffs in the process and was powered by the top line of Milan Kolena (two goals, one assist)-Martin Reway (one goal, three assists)-David Griger (one goal, four assists).

The loss leaves the Germans with an 0-2 record and games against the United States and Czech Republic left in the preliminary round. They will need a bit of luck and a lot of good play if they are to avoid fifth and final place in the Group A standings. (Read the full story)

FINLAND 5, NORWAY 1
By Lucas Aykroyd, IIHF.com: Your best players need to be your best players. That held true as the Finns beat Norway 5-1 on Friday. The first line combined for six points in their opener.

Goalie Juuse Saros earned his first World Junior victory for Finland. The Finns outshot Norway 48-29 at the Malmö Arena.

"It’s good we got our first win," said Finnish captain Teuvo Teräväinen. "We didn’t play our best, but it’s still a big win. Tomorrow against Sweden will be a big game."

One of Malmö’s best-known attractions is the Ribersborgs Kallbadhus, an open-air bath where guests sweat in saunas before leaping into the frigid waters of the Öresund. Similarly, the newly promoted Norwegians have endured the blazing heat of the Russian and Finnish attacks, and now face the chilling realization that they’re already halfway through group play and have only scored once.
