For the thousands of you out there who suggest to your trusty correspondent that he go cover women’s hockey every time he expresses his anti-fighting views, I offer you the following, which took place at the end of a game between the Bemidji State and Ohio State women’s teams Friday night:

A bench-clearing brawl, if you can call it that, between the two teams resulted in 19 ejections and 303 penalty minutes, both records for any college game involving either gender. And just to prove that women’s hockey can be as ridiculous as the men’s game when it comes to justifying this nonsense, Ohio State coach Nate ‘Tommy’ (Slap Shot reference) Handrahan said the brawl started because the Bemidji State players were “hooting and hollering” after their victory. Which means, you know, they had a beat-down coming to them.

“I’ve got to believe that our players, and as a staff, as a program, we’re not happy with teams celebrating and going off the ice yipping and hooting and hollering,” Handrahan said. “But I can tell you this: We’re happy to at least see our girls show some fight and some spirit.”

The brawl, as these things often do, overshadowed something that happened in the game that was actually relevant and worthy of praise. With Bemidji trailing 1-0, Tess Dusik scored to tie the game while killing off a 5-on-3 shorthanded situation.

Each of the players involved in the brawl was suspended for the rematch the following day in which each team had just six forwards and four defenders. The teams tied 2-2 and combined for 18 penalty minutes.
