With DeBoer gone, trio of Lamoriello, Stevens, Oates to coach Devils

The New Jersey Devils are taking a three-pronged approach to coaching after the firing of Pete DeBoer on Friday. The team announced today that Scott Stevens and Adam Oates will work as coaches, while Lou Lamoriello will also patrol the bench for a short period.

When the Devils fired Pete DeBoer on Friday, speculation ran rampant about who would be the next coach in New Jersey. On Saturday, the question was answered… sort of.

The Devils announced late Saturday morning that instead of naming one, single coach, they will be going a less traditional route: GM Lou Lamoriello will step behind the bench with former Devil and Hall of Fame blueliner Scott Stevens helping to coach the defensemen while fellow Hall of Famer Adam Oates will lead the forwards.

It’s an approach that has never really taken before, so it’s tough to say how the whole ordeal will really play out.

As for the coaches, Lamoriello has coached a total of 53 games in the NHL, all with the Devils, and has a record of 34-14-5. Stevens was most recently an assistant coach under DeBoer, but left the team before this season began due to differences with DeBoer. As for Oates, he has the most coaching experience, with 130 games under his belt.

Oates was most recently the coach of the Washington Capitals, but after a disappointing 2013-14, he was let go by Washington. During the campaign it seemed like his fate was sealed before the season even came to a close. Over his tenure as the Capitals bench boss, the team went 65-48-17.

During Saturday's press conference, NHL.com’s Shawn Roarke reported that Lamoriello said there are no promises on who the next coach will be on a long-term basis. Lamoriello added that the team will have one head coach by next season.

“There are no promises, no commitments,” Lamoriello reportedly said. “Right now it’s a collective group working for the players.”

On top of DeBoer being relieved of his duties, so was assistant coach Dave Barr. Assistant coaches Mike Foligno, Tommy Albelin, and Chris Terreri all remained on the staff.
