ST. PAUL, Minn. - Many Minnesota hockey fans still feel jilted by the Dallas Stars, but on Thursday they cheered for a Star they still consider one of their own.

Dallas forward Mike Modano was greeted with a standing ovation by the sellout crowd before the Minnesota Wild game with the Stars. In a ceremony at centre ice, the Wild honoured Modano for his contributions to American hockey, presenting him with a painting of the Minnesota North Stars playing in the 1991 Stanley Cup finals.

"He's the best pick we ever made - best hockey player to ever skate for the North Stars," former North Stars general manager Lou Nanne said. "Mike is a complete player and a leader in every way."

Modano was picked first overall by the North Stars in the 1988 NHL draft and played four seasons in Minnesota before the team moved to Dallas at the end of the 1992-93 season.

Minnesota native Phil Housley presented the painting to Modano, who passed Housley this season to become the NHL's leading scorer among American-born players with 1,263 career points.
