What's wrong with the octopus?

I was baffled watching the beginning of Game 1 in the Wings/Avs series.

It was reported the NHL had decreed that Al Sobotka waving an octopus over his head as he left the ice would no longer be allowed. I was informed the NHL thinks it portrays an image it does not want.

Excuse me? Did the league notice when he waved it over his head that the crowd cheered him on? It would appear the fans enjoyed it!

What image is the NHL trying to portray, exactly?

This was an age-old tradition in Detroit that always got the fans into the game before it even started. Could somebody explain what harm waving an octopus does? Were that many hockey fans shielding their eyes in horror that the NHL needed to put a stop to it?

This one is beyond explanation. The image this portrays is, "sorry, no fun here."
