What’s the deal with this figure skating goalie?

A viral video of a KHL goalie doing some impressive figure skating moves during practice has left us with a lot of questions.

The viral hockey video of the day comes to us today from, where else, Russia. The video below has over 100,000 views on YouTube and counting.

It comes from KHL team Traktor Chelyabinsk, and is simply a Traktor goalie showing off some impressive figure skating moves during a practice. Watch and enjoy. (Note: If it's geo-blocked in your area, try this link: http://eachvideo.com/watch?v=bFG4Dqylork)

The title of the video, translated from the always-reliable Google Translate, says “Goalkeeper "Tractor" danced at the game to support the Russian Figure Skating Championships.”

That checks out, the national figure skating championship will be held in Chelyabinsk from Dec. 20 to 26.

The video is great fun, and the goalie definitely performs admirably considering all the goalie equipment. But never content to just let a video go viral without asking some questions, we wanted to know more about what’s going on here.

So let’s go all Zapruder on this video.

There had to be a second goalie: The goalie making a save at the beginning of the video is not the same goalie doing the figure skating. There isn’t enough context to know whether or not we’re supposed to think they are one in the same, however.

But after the first goalie goes back, and to the left, to try to make a save, the video has a cut and there is a new goalie doing the figure skating. Note the different pads and the neck protector disappearing from the mask.

The goalie is wearing figure skates: If you wondered how a goalie can make those turns and spins in goalie skates -- he can’t. He is clearing wearing figure skates.

What the hell is going on above the boards? Never seen that before. It sort of looks like what may be a green-screen? But it’s even hard to tell if it’s something actually covering the glass in the arena, or something added to the video after it was filmed.

Who is that masked man? Chelyabinsk has two goalies on its roster: Pavel Francouz and Vasily Demchenko. In the description of the video, again translated, a PR person from the team says, “Unfortunately, we can not say which of the goalkeepers danced -- because there is no number on the shirt.” Fishy.

There seems to be more here than meets the eye. Maybe a viral advertising campaign for the skating competition? It’s fun regardless, and we’re not here to try to spoil that fun, but as they say, telling the truth can be a scary thing sometimes.

If you know something about this video we don’t, drop us a line.
