Watch Polish goaltender score incredibly embarrassing own goal

Goaltender David Zabolotny scored one of the worst own goals of the season in the Polish Cup semi-final. Zabolotny’s own goal was the final nail in the coffin in a 3-0 loss, but he was named the game's second star.

Own goals can happen in a number of ways. It’s not rare to see an own goal thanks to a bad bounce, a mistimed swat at the puck or even a clearing attempt that accidentally trickles into a player’s own net on a delayed penalty. Polish netminder David Zabolotny scored an own goal of a different sort, though.

Zabolotny’s JKH GKS Hawks were on the power play and trailing Comarch Cracovia 2-0 in the second period of a semi-final game of the Polish Cup when a puck bounced back into the Hawks’ zone right to Zabolotny. With a Cracovia player bounding down the ice towards him, Zabolotny spun back and attempted to play the puck off the boards to his defenseman Mateusz Danieluk. Maybe you see where this is going.

When Zabolotny turned to fire the puck off the boards, it went straight into his net. In both shock and horror, Zabolotny collapsed to the ice:

Zabolotny’s own goal was the final nail in the coffin as the JKH GKS dropped the semi-final contest 3-0 to Comarch.

While the game will most be remembered for Zabolotny’s gaffe, the netminder actually turned in quite the performance. He was voted the game’s second star by allowing three goals on 31 shots. Of course, his counterpart, Rafał Radziszewski, earned the first star with a 31 save shutout.
