On Sunday, Kane extended his streak to 26 games, though you might need a rule book to figure out how and why.

At this point, nightly Patrick Kane updates aren’t necessary. The Blackhawks star is cruising along, leading the NHL in scoring, and putting together a Hart Trophy-caliber season, and making headlines for his points streak. It’s almost a given he’s getting on the scoresheet every night.

On Sunday, Kane extended his streak to 26 games, though you might need a rule book to figure out how and why.

Kane picked up an assist on the Blackhawks’ first-period goal in their game against the Canucks. Follow along: Kane made a touch pass to Duncan Keith at the point, who fed Artemi Panarin for a one timer in the circle. Panarin’s shot hit the post and he recovered his own rebound. Panarin then made a pass back to Keith in the faceoff circle who scored.

See it here – and don’t blink or you’ll miss Kane’s part of the play:

Because Panarin’s initial shot hit the post, it doesn’t count as a shot on goal. It also meant that there was no change in possession, since he got the puck back. Since Keith scored the goal, he obviously can’t get an assist on his own goal. Therefore, Kane picks up a bit of a gift of an assist since he was the other Blackhawk to touch the puck on the play.

Love it or hate it, those are the rules and the streak lives on.

Kane is getting close to reaching elite company. It’s far too early to start talking about Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record 51-game point streak. But getting to 28 games would be a nice feather in the cap. The last 28-game streak was in 1988-89 by Steve Yzerman. In fact, there hasn’t been a streak this long since Mats Sundin had a 30-game streak with the Nordiques in 1992-93 – streaks like this just don’t happen anymore.

No matter how he does it, Kane’s streak continues to be impressive.
