Watch Matt Greene score first goal in 47 games, forget how to celebrate

Stay-at-home defenseman, veteran leader, and punishing body-checker may be a few ways to describe Los Angeles Kings blueliner Matt Greene. After Tuesday, you can add goal-scorer and terrible celebrator to that list.

Los Angeles Kings blueliner Matt Greene is the physical embodiment of the term stay-at-home defenseman. He’s comfortable on the blueline, using his big frame for a well-timed hit or his hands for a poke-check here and there.

That’s why it’s hilarious to watch the lumbering 6-foot-3 Greene score on a beautiful redirection of a slap-pass from Brayden McNabb and then realize he doesn’t really know how to do the whole celebration thing:

The marker, which gave the Kings a 1-0 lead over the visiting Florida Panthers, was Greene’s first of the season and the first time he’s scored in 47 games. Greene had scored twice last season before being sidelined by injury and, with the goal, moves into 335th place in the goal-scoring race. Look out, NHL.

All jokes aside, it was quite the show of skill to redirect the blistering pass into the yawning goal and not have it skitter away into the corner. It would be remiss to not mention that the goal puts Greene on pace to tie his career-high of four goals, set back in 2011-12.
