It appears the Edmonton Oilers might just have something in this Connor McDavid kid. And if first impressions are any indication, Edmonton’s long wait for an offensive superstar could be over. Soon. As in this coming season.

It appears the Edmonton Oilers might just have something in this Connor McDavid kid. And if first impressions are any indication, Edmonton’s long wait for an offensive superstar could be over. Soon. As in this coming season.

Yes, it was a scrimmage, played 4-on-4 for most of the game and even 3-on-3 at times, and it was against NHL wannabes, but the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft put on a show at the Billy Moores Cup, the final intrasquad scrimmage of the Oilers six-day prospect development camp Monday night. McDavid scored five goals in the game to lead his team to an 8-6 win in the game.

Not sure what was more impressive – that McDavid scored five goals or that 7,300 fans turned out for a prospect game in early July.

McDavid put his array of talents on full display in the game, scoring one goal on a wraparound, the second taking advantage of a giveaway, the third on an intended pass that was redirected in by a defenseman’s stick, the fourth when he sprung himself on a breakaway off another turnover and the fifth when he walked in unimpeded and went backhand-forehand.

McDavid was on the ice and was victimized defensively on a couple of goals, but even then he made a statement. Shortly after fellow Oiler first-rounder Leon Draisaitl takes him to school by stepping around him to score, McDavid stripped Draisaitl of the puck and went in to score a goal of his own.

The game capped a wildly successful rookie camp for McDavid, whose every move on the ice was monitored. And after that performance, the biggest job the Oilers might have when McDavid reports for main camp in September is managing expectations.

Here are the highlights of the game. McDavid’s first goal comes right off the top, with the others following at the 1:45, 2:48, 3:55 and 4:45 marks.
