Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin scored his 500th career goal Sunday night with an absolute rocket of a wrist shot on the power play. Ovechkin was mobbed by teammates after the goal and the game was halted for a moment as Ovechkin saluted the home crowd.

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin became the fifth fastest player in NHL history to 500 career goals Sunday night when he rocketed a shot over the shoulder of Ottawa Senators Andrew Hammond in typical Ovechkin fashion.

With less than four minutes remaining and the Capitals on the power play, Ovechkin set up in his typical spot at the top of the left wing circle before a puck ended up right on his tape. In a flick of the wrists, Ovechkin snapped the puck past Hammond before being mobbed by teammates:

The game was halted for several moments to celebrate Ovechkin’s milestone in front of the Verizon Center faithful, with his parents watching from the crowd. Ovechkin also took a brief skate to salute the crowd for their support and even gave them one extra celebration while he was seated on the bench.

Ovechkin’s goal came in his 801st game, meaning he to the mark two games faster than former Boston Bruins and New York Rangers superstar Phil Esposito. Ovechkin becomes just the 43rd player in NHL history to reach 500 goals. With the goal, he’s now on pace to net more than 50 goals this season, which means he could very well jump more than 10 spots up the all-time goal-scoring list by the time the season is through.

Midway through the third period, Ovechkin netted a dazzling tally for goal No. 501.
