ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals have signed Alexander Semin to a one-year contract extension, the team announced in a statement Saturday night.

Reports suggest the deal is a one-year, $6-million pact.

"I am extremely happy to sign here," Semin said through an interpreter after the Capitals beat New Jersey 4-1. "I like this team. I really like everything here."

The 25-year-old right-winger has 14 goals and 18 assists in 29 games with the Capitals this season.

In 283 career games, the six-foot-two, 208-pound native of Krasnoyarsk, Russia, has recorded 248 points (122 goals, 126 assists).

Semin, who can become an unrestricted free agent after next season, was named to the 2010 Russian Olympic team on Friday.

Washington general manager George McPhee said the Capitals are happy to have Semin for at least another year because of the type of player he's becoming.

"This is a player we drafted and developed," McPhee said. "He's become a very, very good player and continues to improve. We discussed a number of options but this is the way he wanted to go for now."

The Capitals picked Semin 13th overall in the 2002 draft. He a career year last season, scoring 79 points in 62 games.

"He's one of the elite players in the league and to have him is great," Washington coach Bruce Boudreau said.
