The Edmonton Oilers have suffered through another disastrous season in 2009-10. The team will miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year and is poised to finish last overall in the league.

But from these dark times springs some hope. The Oilers will have an excellent chance at drafting either Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin. Both are blue chip prospects who could help turn the tide in E-town.

That, combined with a plethora of prospects already in the system and the maturation of their young talent has put the Oilers on a path to redemption. And to speed up their recovery the team acquired defensive powerhouse Ryan Whitney.

The fifth-year Boston native not only brings poise and calm to the team’s blueline, but his offensive upside adds another weapon to Edmonton’s anemic attack. Whitney’s 31 points puts him in a tie for fourth in team scoring and he will be counted on to improve his production for the remainder of his time in Edmonton if the franchise has any chance of returning to previous glory.

Ryan Dixon caught up with the newest addition to the rebuilding Oilers as Whitney settles into his new home.
