Kunitz was hit by Pavel Datsyuk late in the second period and left the game with assistance from the Penguins training staff.

The Pittsburgh Penguins lost forward Chris Kunitz to injury during the second period in Detroit on Saturday afternoon.

The veteran forward was hit by Pavel Datsyuk late in the period and left the game with assistance from the Penguins training staff.

Datsyuk was assessed a minor penalty for interference on the play.

Beau Bennett replaced Kunitz on the left side of Sidney Crosby to start the third period.

Following the Penguins 7-2 victory over the Red Wings the club announced Kunitz suffered an upper body injury and would be a game-time decision for Sunday when Pittsburgh visits the New York Rangers.

“We’ll re-evaluate Kuni tomorrow,” coach Mike Sullivan said post-game. “He’ll be a game-time decision.”

The loss of Kunitz for any period of time would be a tough blow to the Penguins, who are already without Evgeni Malkin (upper body) for 6-8 weeks.

Kunitz is fourth on the Penguins in points with 17 goals and 21 assists in 72 games this season.

Pittsburgh also lost blue liner Brian Dumoulin in Saturday's win. The 24-year-old will miss Sunday's game due to an upper body injury. Derrick Pouliot will take Dumoulin’s spot in the lineup.
