When Canada announced its roster for the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship, simple math confirmed that the Western League would be well represented in Buffalo, N.Y. - nine of the 22 players chosen are from the WHL. Swift Current Broncos center Cody Eakin is amongst that group and is looking to showcase his world-class work ethic and speed at the tournament.
In 30 games with Swift Current this season, the Winnipeg native has 18 goals and 39 points, but with the plethora of skilled players on the Canadian team, Eakin is likely to play a third-line checking role at the WJC. Eakin has embraced that responsibility and sees it as another step in his development.
The 19-year-old was selected 85th overall by the Washington Capitals at the 2009 NHL draft and it’s expected he will serve a similar third-line role when he makes the jump to the NHL. But for now, Eakin is focused on helping Team Canada capture gold in Buffalo.
THN’s Ryan Kennedy takes a closer look at Eakin as he prepares for the WJC.
