When Rod Brind’Amour was drafted ninth overall in the 1988 entry draft few would have predicted his gritty style would translate into a successful 20-year career, but those familiar with his work ethic are not surprised he is still alive and kicking.

Early in his career, Brind’Amour earned the nickname ‘Rod the Bod’ because his relentless off-ice regime carved his body into a state even pro wrestlers would admire. And it’s that commitment to physical fitness that helped the Ottawa native become an impact player in the NHL.

But this year Brind’Amour has faced a couple of new challenges, such as passing on the captaincy to Eric Staal. Despite Brind’Amour’s difficulties this season he hasn’t made any decisions on retirement or his life after hockey.

Ryan Dixon caught up with the wily veteran as he pondered his future in the game.
