When Alexander Burmistrov decided to leave the Kontinental League for the Ontario League’ s Barrie Colts, he knew it was his best chance to one day realize his dream of playing in the NHL. But that didn’t make the transition any easier.

Burmistrov arrived in Barrie with little grasp of the English language and to say he faced a culture shock would be a gross understatement. But his willingness to learn both on and off the ice, coupled with his tremendous playmaking ability, allowed him to settle in comfortably.

The Kazan, Russia native had 22 goals and 65 points in 62 games with the Colts and also chipped in eight goals and 16 points in Barrie’s run to the OHL final. And his solid performance in major junior means the shifty 18-year-old is a lock to go in the first round of this year’s NHL draft.

Ryan Kennedy takes a closer look at the dynamic center as Burmistrov prepares to take another step toward his dream at the draft in Los Angeles.
