UMass and Notre Dame broke an NCAA Division l record on Friday night, playing a game that lasted an incredible 151 minutes and 42 seconds.
Shane Walsh of the Massachusetts Minutemen earned hero status when he scored in the fifth overtime to give his team a 4-3 victory over Notre Dame in the first round Hockey East Tournament matchup on Friday night.
The goal set the mark for the longest NCAA Division l hockey game ever at 151 minutes and 42 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 150:22 set in an ECAC quarterfinal match between Quinnipiac and Union in March 2010.
Notre Dame goalie and Buffalo Sabres prospect Cal Petersen also set an NCAA Division l record with 87 saves, while UMass goalie Steve Mastalerz stopped 75 shots.
The Hockey East website reports nearly 4,000 people stuck around until 1:24 a.m. Eastern time to watch the marathon game at Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, Indiana. The win put the Minutemen up 1-0 in the best-of-three playoff series.
