Tretiak says he has the support of both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Stephen Harper for the series to take place in August. Hockey Canada also likes the idea but Tretiak says a dispute between the Russian Ice Hockey Federation and the National Hockey League over player contracts needs to be resolved before negotiations can proceed further.
The 35th anniversary series would follow the format of the original thriller, going eight games, with four in Canada and four in Russia.
Tretiak also hopes to play in a Canada-Russia old-timers game at some point during the series.
Paul Henderson scored the dramatic series-winning goal in 1972 with 34 seconds left in what is regarded by many to Canada's greatest sports moment of the century.
