Shawn Matthias, C, Florida Panthers
2008/11/01: The Florida Panthers have assigned center Shawn Matthias back to the American League's Rochester Americans. Matthias appeared in Thursday's home loss against the Ottawa Senators but, with defenseman Jassen Cullimore ready to suit up for the Cats, the club felt it necessary to send its top prospect back down at this time. Matthias should be back up with the Panthers later this season.
Steve Downie, RW/C, Philadelphia Flyers
2008/11/01: The Philadelphia Flyers have assigned forward Steve Downie back to the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms after just one game with the big club. The Flyers also re-assigned Josh Gratton to the Phantoms, after re-acquiring the tough guy earlier in the week.
Mike Weber, D, Buffalo Sabres
2008/11/01: With the walking wounded returning from the Buffalo Sabres blueline, the club has assigned defenseman Mike Weber back to the AHL's Portland Pirates. Weber went pointless with a minus-2 rating in two games with the Sabres.
Michael Ryan, C/W, Carolina Hurricanes
2008/11/01: The Carolina Hurricanes have signed forward Michael Ryan, late of the Buffalo Sabres, to a one-year contract. Ryan will report to the AHL's Albany River Rats for now but could be summoned soon if injuries continue to hit the Carolina forward ranks. Ryan was in training camp with the Nashville Predators on a tryout but was a late cut.
Rob Globke, RW, Free Agent
2008/11/01: Former Florida Panthers prospect Rob Globke has landed on his feet in Denmark, signing on with Frederikshavn White Hawks. INTEL: The 26-year-old was once considered a solid NHL prospect but that seems to be a far-fetched idea nowadays. Globke played 46 NHL games from 2005-08.
Brendan Shanahan, RW/LW, Free Agent
2008/11/01: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that the Blues have been in discussion with unrestricted free agent Brendan Shanahan. The team has not made any offer to 'Shanny' but are trying to gauge his interest in a possible return to where he played from 1991-95.
Brent Sopel, D, Chicago Blackhawks
2008/11/01: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel lit the lamp for his first goal of the season in Friday's win against the Stars. He finished with a plus-1 rating in 14:05 of ice time. It was his first goal dating back to January 11, 2008.

2008/10/31: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Cam Barker picked up a goal, an assist and a plus-1 rating in 17:46 of ice time in Friday's victory over the Stars. Barker also tied for the team lead with five shots on goal.

2008/10/31: Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin allowed two goals on just 23 shots in Friday's win against the Stars. The 'Bulin Wall' ran his record to 3-1-2 and has not suffered a loss in regulation time since his first start of the season back on October 11 at Washington.

2008/11/01: New York Newsday is reporting that Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro has been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to last Sunday, due to his lower body injury. DiPietro will miss Saturday's game against Montreal and will not be eligible to return until November 2. Yann Danis has been recalled from AHL Bridgeport and is expected to get the start on Saturday against his former organization.

2008/10/31: Dallas Stars right wing Jere Lehtinen (groin) missed his 11th straight game on Friday at Chicago and defenseman Doug Janik (eye) missed his sixth consecutive game.

2008/10/31: Dallas Stars forward Brad Richards was unable to play in Friday's game at Chicago due to a lower body injury. The Stars did not disclose how long Richards would be sidelined or how severe his injury is. Chris Conner, who was recalled earlier in the day from Peoria of the AHL, filled in and went scoreless in 12:43 of ice time with no shots on goal.
Craig Rivet, D, Buffalo Sabres
2008/10/31: The Buffalo News is reporting that Sabres defenseman and captain Craig Rivet (knee surgery) is still one to three weeks away from returning to game action. Rivet was able to skate with his teammates in practice on Friday morning for the first time since his October 22 arthroscopic surgery.

2008/10/31: The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting forward Gregory Campbell will miss both games on Saturday at Nashville and Sunday in Atlanta due to his hip flexor injury. Campbell had an MRI on Wednesday and the results did not reveal any significant damage.

2008/10/31: The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting forward Stephen Weiss (groin) will miss Saturday's game at Nashville, as well as Sunday's contest at Atlanta. Weiss has been unable to practice this week and is expected to be sidelined until at least Thursday's game in Los Angeles.

2008/10/31: Dallas Stars forward Joel Lundqvist has been placed on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting that he is expected to miss four to six weeks due to the injury. Lundqvist has posted just one assist in nine games. Chris Conner was recalled from the AHL on an emergency basis following Lundqvist's injury.

2008/10/31: The Miami Herald is reporting that Panthers head coach Rick DeBoer will use goaltender Craig Anderson in between the pipes on Saturday night at Nashville, while starter and former Preds netminder Tomas Vokoun is scheduled for Sunday's game at Atlanta.

2008/10/31: The Nashville Tennessean is reporting that Predators goaltender Dan Ellis is dealing with a strained back, which was the reason Pekka Rinne got the start on Thursday against Edmonton. Ellis was injured in Tuesday's start and his back reportedly tightened up before Thursday's game. Ellis is considered day to day.
Mattias Ohlund, D, Vancouver Canucks
2008/10/31: The Vancouver Sun is reporting that Canucks defenseman Mattias Ohlund suffered a torn ligament in his finger during the team's recently-completed six-game road trip. Ohlund has continued to play through the injury.
Freddy Meyer, D, New York Islanders
2008/10/31: New York Newsday is reporting that Islanders defenseman Freddy Meyer had sports hernia surgery on Friday and is expected to be sidelined at least two to four weeks. The team recalled Brett Skinner from Bridgeport of the AHL earlier this week to replace Meyer.

2008/10/31: New York Newsday is reporting that Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek (shoulder) was able to take part in the team's morning skate on Friday. Martinek has missed the past two weeks due to his injury. Originally, his timetable for return was listed as four to six weeks.

2008/10/31: The Associated Press is reporting that defenseman Tom Poti (groin) will return to the lineup for Saturday's game at Buffalo. Poti has missed the past five games, but he was able to practice on Thursday and worked on the ice with partner Jeff Schultz on Friday.
Marian Gaborik, RW, Minnesota Wild
2008/10/31: Minnesota Wild star winger Marian Gaborik (back) is expected to make the team's trip to Phoenix and is questionable for Saturday's game against the Coyotes. He's missed the last seven games.
