2008/12/02: Despite a couple of rough outings late in the month, Islanders goalie Joey MacDonald was named third star of November by the NHL. He went 8-5-1 with a 2.64 goals against average in 14 consecutive November starts.

Evgeni Malkin, C/W, Pittsburgh Penguins
2008/12/02: The league's leading scorer, Evgeni Malkin, has been named the NHL's second star of November. The Penguins superstar had 23 points in the month, with seven goals and 16 assists.

Alexander Ovechkin, LW, Washington Capitals
2008/12/02: Amassing 25 points in the month, Capitals star Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL's first star of November. He scored 11 goals with 14 assists and a plus-9 for the month.

Niklas Backstrom, G, Minnesota Wild
2008/12/01: One of the top goaltenders in the league this year, the Wild's Niklas Backstrom finally fell apart Monday night. He allowed six goals on 26 Avalanche shots through the first two periods before being replaced to start the third.

Owen Nolan, RW, Minnesota Wild
2008/12/01: Once a 40-goal sniper, veteran Owen Nolan has at least temporarily rediscovered his scoring touch. Monday night he scored for the fourth straight game, but that only gives him five on the year.

Brent Burns, D/RW, Minnesota Wild
2008/12/01: Blueliner Brent Burns had his second two-point game in a week (and second of the year) in Monday's loss to the Avalanche. He had a goal and an assist, the goal ending a nine-game stretch without one.

Mikko Koivu, C, Minnesota Wild
2008/12/01: Make it two straight three-point games for smoking-hot center Mikko Koivu. He had a goal and an assist Monday against the Avalanche, giving him 12 points in his last eight games.

Injury News…

Jean-Sebastien Giguere, G, Anaheim Ducks
2008/12/01: Though he didn't finish the game, Jean-Sebastien Giguere put up a valiant effort for the Ducks Monday in Detroit, stopping 37 of 38 shots and leaving in the third period n the midst of a 1-1 tie due to cramping. Red-hot Jonas Hiller allowed Detroit's game winner in the 2-1 loss.

Curtis Sanford, G, Vancouver Canucks
2008/12/01: Vancouver's goalie injury problems continue. Backup Curtis Sanford had been starting in place of the injured Roberto Luongo, but Sanford pulled out of Monday's game after the first period with what is believed to be a back injury.
