Brian Costello writes that retiring numbers is about more than just scoring goals, in his blog.

Player News…

Cory Schneider, G, Vancouver Canucks
2008/12/08: Rookie Vancouver netminder Cory Schneider allowed four goals on 35 shots during regulation and overtime, then three more during the shootout as the Canucks fell 5-4 at Colorado on Sunday. The highly-touted Schneider has just one win in five appearances this season. He is 1-2-1 with an .896 save percentage and a 2.80 goals-against average.

Daniel Sedin, LW, Vancouver Canucks
2008/12/08: Vancouver winger Daniel Sedin continued his solid recent play Sunday, scoring his 12th goal of the season in the Canucks' 5-4 shootout loss at Colorado. Sedin has tallied at least one point in 11 of his past 12 outings, totaling 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) over that span.

Steve Bernier, RW, Vancouver Canucks
2008/12/08: Canucks winger Steve Bernier scored two goals Sunday in the Canucks' 5-4 shootout loss at Colorado. The fourth-year power forward has three points in the past three games. Bernier's ice-time has been erratic over the past several weeks (partly due to a shoulder problem) but his 16:35 Sunday was his most since Oct.21 (when he played 19:32 at Columbus}.

Peter Budaj, G, Colorado Avalanche
2008/12/08: Peter Budaj made 34 saves Sunday as the Avalanche downed the visiting Vancouver Canucks 5-4 in a shootout. The veteran netminder is 2-1-1 in his past four outings.

Ryan Smyth, LW, Colorado Avalanche
2008/12/08: Veteran winger Ryan Smyth scored his ninth goal of the season in Sunday's 5-4 shootout home victory over the Vancouver Canucks. The point gives Smyth four in as many games, and 16 points in 27 games overall this season. He was also an impressive plus-4 in the contest, a nice sign for a player who entered the game at minus-7 for the season.

Paul Stastny, C, Colorado Avalanche
2008/12/08: Colorado pivot Paul Stastny collected three assists in Sunday's 5-4 shootout victory over visiting Vancouver. The 22-year-old playmaker is heating up lately, posting seven (two goals, five assists) over his past four games. His season totals of 18 helpers and 24 points lead the team.

Injury News…

Sami Salo, D, Vancouver Canucks
2008/12/08: Veteran rearguard Sami Salo left in the first period of Vancouver's 5-4 shootout loss at Colorado on Sunday after apparently hurting his groin. He did not return. Head coach Alain Vigneault told the Vancouver Province Salo appears to have "tweaked" the groin, but was uncertain how long the defenseman might be sidelined.

Brian Willsie, RW, Colorado Avalanche
2008/12/07: Colorado Avalanche winger Brian Willsie will be sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Willsie sustained the injury on Thursday during a 3-2 loss to Nashville. Rookie winger Chris Stewart has taken his spot in the lineup, posting a minus-1 rating in his first outing.

Rick DiPietro, G, New York Islanders
2008/12/07: New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro recently started skating without pads, according to Newsday. The Isles are still giving no timetable for the franchise netminder's return. Since the start of the 2008 calendar year, DiPietro has had surgery on each knee as well as on his hip, and the strong recent play of fill-in Joey MacDonald has given the team the luxury of ensuring he's fully healthy before he tries returning.

Marian Gaborik, RW, Minnesota Wild
2008/12/07: Minnesota forward Marion Gaborik returned to the ice for a 45-minute skate last Wednesday, reports the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. That comes on the heels of him staying away from the ice for the previous week, so the speedy winger seems to be improving from the mysterious lower-body/back injury that has kept him out for all but the Wild's first two games this season.

Ryan Whitney, D, Pittsburgh Penguins
2008/12/07: Pittsburgh defenseman Ryan Whitney has been back practicing (non-contact) since November 21. He has been out since undergoing foot surgery back in August, but hopes to start contact by early next week. If everything goes smoothly in that department, he could return either just before, or just after, the Christmas break.

Cam Ward, G, Carolina Hurricanes
2008/12/07: The Hurricanes have placed usual starting goalie Cam Ward on injured reserve due to a groin injury, according to the Sports Network. He has missed the past two games to the problem. In a related move, Carolina has called up defenseman Brett Carson from the American League’s Albany. Michael Leighton will likely get the bulk of starts in goal for the 'Canes for at least the next week, with Justin Peters spotting him.

Ryan Malone, LW, Tampa Bay Lightning
2008/12/07: The Lightning were without recently-hot winger Ryan Malone for their 4-3 home loss to Buffalo Saturday night. Malone sat out with an undisclosed upper body injury. No word yet on the nature and extent of the injury, but it's a tough break for Malone and the Lightning. He had nine points over seven games heading in, following four games missed to a lower-body injury.
