Jim McCutcheon, Listowel, Ont.

Nine distinguished gentlemen from the small town of Listowel, Ont., recently embarked on a weekend bachelor party to Chicago, with plans to attend Game 4 of the Western Conference final between the hometown Blackhawks and the San Jose Sharks.

Our only problem was that we only had six tickets to the game.

The day before Game 4, we attended a White Sox game at U.S. Cellular Field. Traveling on the El-Train after the game, we noticed a familiar face on board: John Ferguson Jr., former Leafs GM and current San Jose Sharks scout, was sharing the car with us.

After telling John that we lived close to Toronto, we let him in on our unfortunate predicament. We took a chance and asked him if he would be able to help us. He obliged, and before getting off at his stop, gave us his email address to allow us to follow up with him.

A few hours and several email exchanges later, John came through for us.

The next day, three additional tickets were waiting for us at the United Center box office, allowing all nine of us to attend.

As exciting as the game turned out to be, it was a random event leading up to it that left us all with an unforgettable story to tell.

As a hockey fan, I may be biased in saying this, but I believe stories like this are more commonplace in hockey than in any other sport.

How many people would give their personal email address to strangers and follow up the way John did?

At the time, he may not have realized how appreciative we were for his generosity, but all nine of us hope he knows now.

Thank you, JFJ, for making a great weekend a perfect one.
