Sweden nips Russia 4-3; Finland beats Czechs 5-3 to open LG Hockey Games

STOCKHOLM - Sweden killed off a two-man Russian power play that lasted one minute 43 seconds late in the third period to register a 4-3 victory over the defending Euro Hockey Tour champion in a LG Hockey Games opener Thursday.

Earlier in Prague, Finland beat the Czech Republic 5-3. Sweden's win snapped a nine-game losing streak against Russia, the reigning world champion and two-time defending Euro Hockey Tour victor. Sweden's last win against Russia was in the 2007 Euro Hockey Tour final.

Led by former NHL defenceman Kenny Jonsson, Sweden received a standing ovation from the near-sellout crowd at Ericsson Globe Arena after surviving the heavy Russia pressure.

Jonsson, Mathias Tjarnqvist, Daniel Widing, Mattias Weinhandl scored for Sweden.

Alexander Suglobov, Maxim Rybin and Oleg Saprikin countered for Russia.

The tournament is the last stop of the four-leg Euro Hockey Tour. The others were played in Finland, Russia and the Czech Republic.

Russia leads the overall standings.

On Saturday, Finland plays Russia and Sweden takes on the Czechs. The tournament ends Sunday with the Czechs playing Russia and Sweden facing arch-rival Finland in Stockholm.
