Suspend him or not: Andrew Shaw catches Francois Beauchemin with high hit

Blackhawks winger Andrew Shaw could be facing a suspension following a high hit on Avalanche defenseman Francois Beauchemin. Shaw was handed a charging penalty. Beauchemin didn’t return to the contest. Shaw has been suspended once in his career.

Pesky Chicago Blackhawks winger Andrew Shaw hasn’t been suspended by the NHL since the 2012 post-season, but he could be getting a call from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety following a collision with Colorado Avalanche defenseman Francois Beauchemin.

In the third period of Chicago’s 3-0 loss at the hands of the Avalanche, Shaw came across the ice to throw a hit on Beauchemin. When Shaw made the contact, though, it appeared his shoulder and head made contact with Beauchemin’s head, which left the Colorado blueliner temporarily dazed:

Beauchemin was helped off the ice by training staff and he immediately headed down the tunnel to the Avalanche dressing room. There was no update on Beauchemin’s status, but the 35-year-old defenseman was unable to return to a close game.

Shaw received a minor penalty for charging on the play, but there could be grounds for a suspension. Even if it may have been with his own head, Shaw appeared to make contact with Beauchemin’s head before anything else and there’s no doubt that the hit was reckless. Should Shaw draw a suspension and Beauchemin be out for any length of time, that could also play a part in just how long Shaw is suspended for.

Shaw has only been suspended once before, which came in 2012 as the result of a hit on Arizona Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith. He was also fined $2,000 in April 2015 for embellishment.
