Shirokov scores twice as Moose beat Penguins 6-4 to snap 6-game losing streak

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Sergei Shirokov scored twice in the first period as the Manitoba Moose snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 6-4 Saturday night in American Hockey League action.

Shirokov, who signed an entry-level deal with the Vancouver Canucks last off-season, leads all Moose scorers with 16 goals and 33 points and is tied for fourth in AHL rookie scoring.

The Moscow native scored goals two consecutive goals in the first period to give Manitoba a 3-1 lead. Matt Pettinger had a goal and two assists, while Mike Keane, Marco Rosa and Dusty Collins also scored for the Moose (24-21-5), who won for the first time since shutting out the Abbotsford Heat 3-0 on January 13.

Luca Caputi led the Penguins (21-23-2) with two goals and an assist. Dustin Jeffrey had a goal and two assists and Eric Tangradi also scored.

Cory Schneider made 24 saves for Manitoba, while Penguins netminder Brad Thiessen stopped 20 shots.
