TORONTO - A senior hockey player has died after spending nearly three weeks in a coma after hitting his head on the ice during a fight.

The team website for the Ontario Hockey Association's Whitby Dunlops says defenceman Don Sanderson, 21, died at 1 a.m. this morning at Hamilton General Hospital.

Sanderson struck his unprotected head on the ice during a game against the Brantford Blast on Dec. 12.

His helmet came off during a fight with Brantford's Corey Fulton in the third period.

While briefly regaining consciousness after the incident, he had been in a coma and on life support up until his death.

There's no word yet on funeral arrangements for Sanderson, a native of Port Perry, Ont., and a student at York University.
