Ottawa Senators winger Zack Smith is the second player this season to be fined for diving/embellishment. Smith was warned for embellishing a call during a Nov. 12 game against the Vancouver Canucks, and he drew the $2,000 fine for a dive Dec. 10 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The NHL has handed down its second fine of the season for diving Thursday as Ottawa’s Zack Smith will be out $2,000 for attempting to sell a call.

Smith, 27, was hit with the fine for his actions midway through the first period of the Senators’ Dec. 10 contest against the Tampa Bay Lightning. With the puck turned over deep in the Tampa Bay zone, Smith was backchecking when he became tangled up with Lightning captain Steven Stamkos. Smith fell to the ice after very little contact with Stamkos:

As is the case with all players fined for diving, this was Smith’s second infraction. His first instance of embellishment, which came along with a warning, occurred less than a month earlier in a Nov. 12 game against the Vancouver Canucks.

The NHL does not specify what warranted Smith’s warning, but it could very well have been an incident late in the first period of the Nov. 12 game. Smith was carrying the puck up ice and was swiped at with the stick of Canucks winger Chris Higgins. Higgins’ stick caught Smith in the shoulder and across the chest, but Smith snapped his head back and grabbed his face. The result of the play was a minor penalty to Higgins for high-sticking.

Smith has neither been fined nor suspended before in his career. He joins Detroit Red Wings winger Teemu Pulkkinen as players who have been fined this season for diving.

If Smith is cited for diving or embellishment again, he can be increasingly fined up to an amount of $5,000. If Smith is fined five times, Senators coach Dave Cameron would also be hit with a $2,000 fine.
