The Ottawa Senators might want to consider playing with four skaters more often.

The Senators scored three shorthanded goals in a 5-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. Given they only afforded the Canadiens with four power plays, that’s quite the clip.

Mark Stone set up Jean-Gabriel Pageau for the opening goal of the game at 12:02 of the first period. It was his NHL-leading sixth goal while shorthanded.

The Sens scored their second undermanned marker in the second as center Curtis Lazar beat Canadiens goaltender Ben Scrivens on a breakaway at 12:01.

Now up 3-0 on a goal from defenseman Marc Methot, Alex Chiasson netted the third 4-on-5 goal at 3:17 of the final frame on a partial break. Chiasson’s tally marked the fourth time in club history they’ve accomplished such a feat in a single game.

It was only the first time Montreal had surrendered three goals in a game while on the power play.

Mika Zibanejad scored the other Senators goal. They outshot the Canadiens 44-30 as Andrew Hammond picked up his fourth career shutout and first of the season.

The three shorthanded goals continue to show Ottawa’s offensive prowess. The Senators, who are seven points out of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, lead the NHL with 15 of them.

There is a problem though. The Sens own the league’s worst penalty killing efficiency at 74.5 percent. Maybe they shouldn’t play with four skaters all the time after all.
