BUFFALO, N.Y. - It's a big blow for the Ottawa Senators.

Captain Daniel Alfredsson is expected to miss four to six weeks due to a separated left shoulder. Head coach Cory Clouston confirmed the news at the team's pre-game skate in Buffalo on Saturday.

Alfredsson injured his left shoulder in the first period of an 8-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night. He met with a team doctor when he returned to Ottawa on Thursday.

Penguins right-winger Craig Adams hit Alfredsson while his head was down and he was battling for the puck with another player in the corner. The hit caused Alfredsson's helmet to fly off and he was laid out on the ice for a short time.

"I'm trying to reach for the puck - I don't think I'll ever get to it, but in the position I am in there, I'm pretty vulnerable . . . and he stepped into me," Alfredsson said after the game.

Adams wasn't penalized on the play.

Alfredsson leads the Senators in points (31) and assists (22).

The Senators have recalled forward Ryan Keller on an emergency basis from the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators. Keller, 25, has recorded 25 points (13 goals, 12 assists) in 24 games for the B-Sens this season.
