CHICAGO - Chicago defenceman Brent Seabrook has signed a US$10.5-million, three-year contract extension with the Blackhawks.

He'll earn $3.5 million each of the next three seasons. "Brent Seabrook is one of our core players and we feel he has a brilliant future," GM Dale Tallon said in making the announcement Monday. "Seabrook is a big part of our team and one of our team leaders.

"He is going to be a major part of our success for many years to come."

The six-foot-three blue-liner from Richmond, B.C., has seven goals, 12 assists and a plus-12 rating in 58 games in his third season with the Blackhawks.

Seabrook, 22, who played for the WHL's Lethbridge Hurricanes, was Chicago's first choice, 14th overall, in the 2003 NHL entry draft.

He was on the Canadian world junior teams that won silver in 2004 and gold in 2005, and he played for Canada when it finished fourth at the 2006 senior world tournament.

Seabrook is usually paired with Duncan Keith on defence.

"I'm excited about continuing my career with the Blackhawks," he said. "I love the city of Chicago and really enjoy playing for our great fans."

Seabrook is currently in the final year of a three-year, entry-level contract that is paying him $942,400 this season.
