Scoreboard at Isles' soon-to-be home hangs comically off-center

Things aren't always straight-forward with the New York Islanders. That's true of the scoreboard in their soon-to-be-home, Barclay Center in Brooklyn. The Jumbotron hangs off-center for hockey.

For a team with a quirky history, why not a quirky scoreboard?

When the New York Islanders move into their new digs in Brooklyn to start 2015-16, their Jumbotron will be off-center, closer to one blueline in Barclays Center than the other.

Spectators got a glimpse of this on Friday when the club played host to the New Jersey Devils. While it’s hardly earth-shattering, it does create an unusual visual, particularly from the side stands.

The reason for the off-kilter scoreboard is the arena’s design. In order to accommodate the 200-by-85-foot NHL ice surface, one end of seating at Barclays Center needs to retract. When that happens, the giant screen, which hangs directly over center court for the arena's primary tenant, the Brooklyn Nets, becomes askew.

The venue, which holds approximately 15,800 for hockey, also features about 400 obstructed view seats above one of the goals. According to one spectator, fans cannot see the net directly below them, even when they stand up. (Insert your own joke here about whether that’s a good or bad thing).

On the bright side, reviews of the facility have been generally positive, particularly in comparison to the dated Nassau Coliseum.
