Save of the season candidate – Reto Berra

Reto Berra's bicycle kick save on Jack Johnson is the NHL save of the season so far. The Flames goalie slid across his crease and kicked his right leg into the air to stop Johnson's wrist shot that was labelled to the top corner.

In case you missed it, Calgary's Reto Berra made the save of the season last night with a stunning bicycle kick save on Jack Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

It's better seen than written about, so here it is:

Save of the season? If so, only because of the acrobatic nature of it. It certainly wasn't because it came at a pivotal moment in a crucial match. Both teams entered the game with identical 7-11-3 records and have been in a world of hurt lately. The Flames have slipped down the standings after an impressive start. The Blue Jackets have battled injuries and have struggled since moving to the Eastern Conference.

The save came with the game scoreless midway through the first period with the Blue Jackets on the power play. Columbus won the game 2-1 in overtime.

As for Berra, he's been mostly so-so since being called up from Abbotsford of the AHL to replace the demoted Joey MacDonald. Berra came  to the Flames organization from the St. Louis Blues in the Jay Bouwmeester trade last spring. He starred for Switzerland at the World Championship last year and has won the heart of Calgary coach Bob Hartley, who has started Berra five straight games and eight of nine since being recalled.

Berra, 26, has just a 2-4-2 record with a 3.42 goals-against average and .889 save percentage. He has a propensity for letting out big, juicy rebounds. In fact, the name Reto is the short form for 'rebound to.'
