SAN JOSE, Calif. - Benn Ferriero scored a power-play goal late in the third period and Harri Sateri stopped 28 shots in the San Jose Sharks' 1-0 pre-season victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night.
Ferriero was standing in front of the net when he grabbed a rebound of Logan Couture's shot and put the puck past goalie Jason LaBarbera with 4:11 remaining. San Jose (3-0) had failed on its first five power plays.
LaBarbera made 29 saves for Phoenix (2-2), which was outshot 30-28. The teams combined for only seven shots in the second period.
Sateri, who is behind goalies Antti Niemi and Antero Niittymaki on the Sharks' depth chart, is trying to earn a spot on the team.
Sateri would be insurance because San Jose has already signed Thomas Greiss to be the top backup. Niittymaki had hip surgery this week and is expected to miss 12 weeks. Niemi hasn't practised with the team after having a cyst removed a week before training camp.
Sharks regulars Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Dan Boyle all sat out after making their pre-season debut Friday night in a 5-1 win over Anaheim. They are expected to play Sunday in Vancouver against the Canucks.
