LOS ANGELES - Mathieu Garon made 31 saves in regulation and stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout, leading the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night in his return to Staples Center.

Garon, who spent the previous two seasons in Los Angeles, made his first start against his former teammates since signing a two-year contract with Edmonton as an unrestricted free agent July 3.

Most of the third period was played in the Edmonton zone, as the Kings outshot the Oilers 13-3, and Garon held his ground until Ladislav Nagy converted Derek Armstrong's centring pass from the right corner during a goalmouth collision that landed Garon on the seat of his pants. It took a lengthy video replay delay to confirm the goal.

The Kings nearly won it but Patrick O'Sullivan's 25-foot wrist shot hit the right post behind Garon's stick hand with 3:11 left in the extra five-minute session.

Joni Pitkanen, Dustin Penner and Patrick Thoresen scored second-period goals for the Oilers, who are a league-best 7-1 in shootouts.

Anze Kopitar scored in his third consecutive game and assisted on Dustin Brown's power-play goal, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Kings' seventh loss in nine games.
