Sabres’ Stafford beats Islanders’ Halak with nifty move

Buffalo Sabres winger Drew Stafford has been a fixture of trade talks and, if he does get dealt, he’ll leave fans with some nice memories, including this dazzling tally against the New York Islanders on Sunday night.

Drew Stafford’s name has been batted around in the rumor mill this season, and if the Sabres are looking to move the winger partial breakaway beauties like this will help.

Stafford, who is second on the Sabres with .49 points per game, collected a pass from center Marcus Foligno after the big pivot had knocked down a clearing attempt. With the puck on his stick and teammate Brian Flynn driving the net to his left, Stafford looked off Flynn and pulled Islanders netminder Jaroslav Halak out of his net before pulling the puck around Halak and sliding the puck into the open side.

The goal gave Stafford nine on the season but, as often happens during Sabres games, the best part of the marker is the call by Buffalo’s play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret.

Stafford’s goal came two and a half minutes after Foligno had made the score 3-1, but the Islanders would hold on for the 3-2 victory. The Sabres were held to only 10 shots in the game, surrendering 31 to New York in the process.
