The 32-year-old scored five goals and nine assists in 20 regular season games with the Russian club. He added seven goals and eight assists in 23 playoff games as Magnitogorsk, won the Gagarin Cup.

Given how his past two seasons in the NHL went, it’s no surprise Alexander Semin has elected to remain in the KHL for the 2016-17 season.

According to Russian hockey writer Igor Eronko, Semin has signed a one-year deal with Magnitogorsk where he finished this past season.

Semin started the 2015-16 season with the Montreal Canadiens scoring a goal and adding three assists in 15 games after signing a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Habs last summer.

In December, Semin was placed on waivers by the Canadiens and went unclaimed. The 32-year-old declined his assignment to the American Hockey League’s St. John's IceCaps and had his contract terminated after passing through unconditional waivers.

Semin signed with Magnitogorsk for the remainder of the season in mid-December where he had five goals and nine assists in 20 regular season games. He added seven goals and eight assists in 23 playoff games as Magnitogorsk, won the Gagarin Cup.

Originally a first-round pick of the Washington Capitals in 2002, Semin has scored 239 goals and 517 points in 650 NHL games with the Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes and Canadiens.
