Buffalo Sabres winger Evander Kane is reportedly the subject of a sex offense investigation. Kane, 24, was not at Sabres practice Sunday for personal reasons. Kane has not been charged with a crime.

Buffalo Sabres winger Evander Kane is reportedly the subject of a sex offense investigation by Buffalo police following an alleged incident that occurred Sunday morning, according to The Buffalo News.

The Buffalo News’ Lou Michel and Tim Graham reported Sunday evening that three police sources have confirmed Kane is the subject of an investigation. Kane, 24, has not been charged with any crime.

“We have an investigation ongoing,” a Buffalo police source told The Buffalo News. “We are not naming the suspect, and we do not expect it to be resolved in the very near future.” Another source told The Buffalo News the woman involved in the investigation was having “memory issues.”

Kane was not at Buffalo’s practice Sunday. The Sabres said he was absent for personal reasons.

According to The Buffalo News, police sources have said the investigation “is in its very early stages.”

"We take the allegation made today against Evander Kane very seriously," the Sabres said in a statement. "We are gathering facts and have been in touch with the NHL and Evander's representatives. Until we have more information we will not have any additional comment."

The Buffalo News reported Kane is represented by Paul J. Cambria, the same lawyer who represented Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane in the off-season.

Evander Kane was acquired by the Sabres in February from the Winnipeg Jets in an eight-player deal. In 25 games this season, Kane has scored eight goals and 13 points. He had scored in each of his past three games, including a goal Saturday against the Boston Bruins. Kane missed 10 games earlier this season with a knee injury.

Buffalo is back in action Monday against the Washington Capitals.
