With the hiring Tuesday of assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon, the Las Vegas NHL team has made several steps in an attempt to shape the organization. A name, however, is proving to be a bit more challenging.

According to Steve Carp of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, owner Bill Foley is unable to use the nickname Knights because it is owned by the national champion OHL team.

“The London Knights own the name in Canada, and to acquire the name from London is not economically feasible,” Foley told Carp. “In the U.S., ‘Knights’ are fine. But we can’t use it in Canada.”

Foley did tell Carp that “Knights is in play in some form.”

Foley first expressed a desire to call the team the “Black Knights” – a tribute to the Army Black Knights – but that’s said to be off the table because of trademarks and copyrights.

Despite all the hurdles, Foley told Carp he’s narrowed a team name down to four choices from an original list of 18. The choices have been submitted to the NHL for approval.

He’s keeping those options mum until an unveiling, targeted for late September or early October.

“We want to make it a special event for everyone,” Foley told Carp. “I know everyone is anxious about the name. But we want to get it right.”
