NEW YORK, N.Y. - Newsday is reporting the New York Islanders have cancelled their plans to spend part of training camp in China.
The Islanders were supposed to visit owner Charles Wang's native country from Sept. 14-23. Wang has established several initiatives to promote the game in China.
But the trip was cancelled primarily due to a procedural disagreement with the players' association, according to a story posted on Newsday's website on Monday.
Islanders general manager Garth Snow tells the newspaper the team is working on an alternative training camp schedule.
The NHL is trying to make the league and sport more prominent on the world stage. It has opened the past three regular seasons with games throughout Europe.
