Detroit Red Wings rookie Dylan Larkin had a great NHL debut. After getting his first point on a goal by Justin Abdelkader in the first period, Larkin unleashed a beautiful wrist shot over the shoulder of Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier just 20 seconds into the second frame.

It’s only his first game, but Dylan Larkin has already made himself a fan favorite in Detroit.

In the Red Wings’ season- and home-opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Larkin got himself on the score sheet less than 10 minutes into the first frame with the primary assist on Justin Abdelkader’s second goal of the game. But in the second period, Larkin didn’t waste any time getting himself his first career goal.

Shortly after the puck had dropped for the second, Larkin was streaking down the left wing and snapped an absolutely perfectly placed wrist shot over the shoulder of Maple Leafs netminder Jonathan Bernier:

Say what you will about Bernier’s positioning on the shot, but Larkin had a sliver of space to fit that wrister by the Toronto goaltender and the rookie found it.

Larkin’s line, with Abdelkader on the opposite wing and Henrik Zetterberg down the middle, was responsible for the Red Wings’ second, third and fourth goals. Larkin didn’t notch a point on Abdelkader’s third goal of the evening, but the 19-year-old’s speed turned what would have been a one-on-one for Abdelkader into a Detroit two-on-one situation. That allowed Abdelkader space to score the hat trick goal.

In the preseason, Larkin had scored already shown his ability, scoring three goals and four points in five contests. With two points in his first game, Larkin is the early frontrunner in rookie scoring.
