Ray Emery on the verge of joining Philadelphia Flyers

According to inside sources, former Ottawa Senators goalie Ray Emery is close to signing a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers after a one-year stint in Russia. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren was also seen talking with Emery’s agent, J.P. Barry, at the draft combine in Toronto last week.

The mercurial netminder helped the Senators to a Stanley Cup final in 2007, but fell out of favor due to a combination of off-ice issues and on-ice results. After a rough start in Russia with Atlant Mystichi, Emery’s play improved, but he was once again on the media radar after punching a team trainer who tried to put a hat on the goalie after Emery had been pulled from a game.

Philadelphia has famously struggled to find a No. 1 goaltender for years and the tandem of Martin Biron and Antero Niittymaki did nothing to dispel that notion this season. Both netminders are bound for unrestricted free agency and posted identical pedestrian 2.76 goals-against averages during the regular season.
