Rankings teams 1-16 would create real rivalries

I read with interest Eric Duhatschek’s opinion piece in the April 27 issue on reverting back to a divisional playoff format for the early rounds where a team has to play their way out of their division before crossing over for the conference final.

This idea, as well our current NHL playoff format, guarantees one thing.  That we will never ever again see Montreal-Toronto, New Jersey-Rangers or Edmonton-Calgary battling in a Stanley Cup final matchup.  And that’s a shame.

What was the drawback of seeding teams league wide from one to 16 for the playoffs?

The possibility of unfavourable travel? Detroit or Columbus could face an opponent who calls home three time zones away anytime in the first three rounds, maybe in all three conference rounds!

Teams in the Eastern Conference never leave the Eastern Time Zone until possibly the final in the current and in Duhatschek’s playoff set up.  Let’s find a way that allows any team to play any other team in the Stanley Cup final.

Maybe, just maybe, it would be a Stanley Cup matchup that is Must See TV!
