Proteau's Blog: Quote vs. Cliche

• Time will tell if the New York Rangers gave up too much Monday to acquire Sean Avery from the L.A. Kings. All I know is it seems wholly unfair one of the league's best quotes was swapped for a package of players that includes a guy named Cliche.

• Avery will provide the Rangers with more grit, but he alone won't be able to stop third-period collapses like the one that led to Monday night's 4-3 loss to Detroit.

I'll say it again: the Blueshirts are a team in no small amount of trouble and if they don't straighten out their dressing room issues, they'll be much closer to securing the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft than a playoff berth.

• News that Canadiens owner George Gillette and Stars owner Tom Hicks are partnering up to buy English soccer club Liverpool got me to thinking: we need Bill Wirtz and Jeremy Jacobs to join forces and buy what would quickly become the worst-managed franchise in pro sports history.

Can you imagine it? Those two together would be the ownership equivalent of Ishtar, Howard The Duck, Gigli and The Adventures of Pluto Nash rolled into one. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see the entire fabric of space and time collapse in on itself if Jacobs and Wirtz combined their hockey “savvy”.

• Blog reader and Penguins fan John Henry enjoyed Monday's entry so much, he used one section and turned it into a pretty cool little comic. Check it out HERE.
