Had great fun listening to Sens coach Bryan Murray politely throw Dominik Hasek under the proverbial bus while talking to Michael Landsberg on TSN's Off The Record yesterday.

Murray explained how he and his players went to their now former No. 1 goalie during the post-season on more than one occasion last year, and all but begged Hasek to play – or at the very least, provide an emotional boost by sitting on the bench and backing up Ray Emery. Hasek declined.

Makes it harder to place him in the same category as a Steve Yzerman, Bobby Baun or Willis Reed, doesn't it?Â…

Patrik Elias was named captain in New Jersey. Nicklas Lidstrom got the C in Detroit. Jaromir Jagr was similarly honored by the Rangers. One of these things is not like the otherÂ…

Two goals for Brendan Shanahan during the Rangers game gives the veteran left winger 600 in his Hall-of-Fame-worthy career. I think that, coming off a 40-goal campaign with Detroit, and playing on the Rangers' top line with Jaromir Jagr, Shanahan has a legitimate shot at 50 this year.

If he can do it, he would break former Bruins great Johnny Bucyk's NHL record for oldest player to hit the half-century goal mark in a single season. Bucyk was 35 when he set the mark; Shanahan will be 38 in JanuaryÂ…

The home-and-home series that started Ottawa's and Toronto's seasons was a perfect symbol of the new NHL. The Senators got stronger as Game 1 rolled along, and by the time it was over and Ottawa won 4-1, Maple Leafs fans were registering their worry in record amounts. The next night, Toronto dominates from start to finish, and flat out wallops the Sens 6-0.

The moral: this is a Jekyll & Hyde league now, folks. Get used to it...

FYI, my first Ask Adam feature is up today. Take a gander HERE.
