Caught most of the Leafs/Devils game and if it wasn't clear before, it should be now: Bryan McCabe and Tomas Kaberle never should be paired up again. As evidenced last night (and countless other occasions over the years), neither player can provide the last-minute lockdowns needed to close out a tight game. John Ferguson had best start shopping for a defensively responsible blueliner before the league's cupboards grow bare.

After the first two periods of Dallas' opening game of the year against Colorado, I was fully prepared to reconsider my selection of them as a playoff team. Since then, Marty Turco has allowed just two goals in seven periods and Eric Lindros has a goal and four assists over the same span. As a result, I am fully prepared to reconsider my reconsidering of the Stars. They're a team to be reckoned with – at least, in the regular season.

Jaromir Jagr's hooking penalty with 1:03 left in the third last night led to Sidney Crosby's goal, and a 6-5 Pittsburgh win over the Rangers. Not exactly the type of discipline you want to see in your newly-named captain, is it?

Speaking of the Rangers: apparently, sophomore goalie Henrik Lundqvist's nickname is “Hank.” I did not know this fact, but I love this fact. The league needs more Hanks.

Somebody break up the Minnesota Wild. They've got a franchise-record four wins to start the season – including two shootout triumphs and an overtime victory – and their lone regulation-time win (against Nashville) came after a Brian Rolston goal with 1:11 left in the third period. At this rate, coach Jacques Lemaire may be placed on stress leave long before his brand-new contract extension kicks in.
