• The most amazing part of last night's Brett Hull jersey retirement ceremony in St. Louis wasn't the fact that his speech lasted 16 minutes – the same number on the back of his sweater during his glory years with the Blues – but that an above-capacity crowd of 19,646 showed up to see it. John Davidson might want to think about retiring other parts of Hull's equipment for each of St. Louis' remaining 27 home games.

• On the other side of the attendance coin, it was another brutal night at the turnstiles on Long Island, where just 8,741 were in the stands to watch the Isles get doubled up by Ottawa. Charles Wang and Garth Snow certainly have defied on-ice expectations this season, but only the Blues have averaged fewer people in the building. Maybe Hull can show up for a game and make a speech about his four-assist, five-point night against the Islanders in 1991.

• Yes, I know the Colorado Avalanche are just two points out of a post-season berth as of this morning, but they've lost nine of their last 15 games. They've also recently established a pattern of playing Jose Theodore for three games, then starting Peter Budaj for the next three. Translation: nobody is stepping up to claim the No. 1 job and that's never an encouraging sign for a team with playoff aspirations.

FEEDBACK:
The Colorado situation might also be a case of paying Theodore a mint and not being able to justify over $5 million a year for a doorman.
