NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Predators have signed the franchise's all-time leading scorer to a long-term deal.

The NHL team inked forward David Legwand to a US$27-million, six-year extension on Friday.

Legwand has seven goals and 14 assists this season. He has spent all eight of his NHL seasons with the Predators and owns the team record for points (304) and goals (113) and ranks second in games played (510) and assists (191).

"This is the first step moving forward under new ownership and is a sign of commitment, a desire to win and a desire to keep the core of our young team together in Nashville," said Predators executive vice-president and GM David Poile. "David Legwand continues to improve and take on a larger role each season.

"He is entering the prime of his career, and we feel that he is becoming one of the league's most complete players."

Last season, Legwand posted career highs with 27 goals, 36 assists and 63 points.

The Detroit native was the first-ever draft pick in team history, taken second overall in 1998.
