The Hockey News player of the week for the period of June 8-13, 2009 is Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

In Games 6 and 7 of the Stanley Cup final, Fleury held the Red Wings to just two goals on 50 shots for a .960 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average.  With his outstanding play, Fleury helped backstop the Penguins to their third Stanley Cup and first since 1992.  He made countless timely saves, including one in the dying seconds of Game 7 on Nicklas Lidstrom that kept the Wings from tying the contest.

Although Fleury did not win the Conn Smythe as the MVP of the playoffs, he was one of the major reasons why the Penguins were able to put down the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Fleury earned the ‘W’ in all 16 games the Penguins won in the playoffs, including their first win in Joe Louis Arena since Game 5 of last year’s final.  Through the playoffs, Fleury put up a .908 save percentage and 2.61 goals against average while going 16-8.
